Dr. Wei has been involved in the field of polymers for more than 30 years and mainly focuses on the development of conjugated polymers for organic photovoltaics and polymer composites for structural applications as well as two-dimensional materials for hydrogen evolution reactions. Currently, he is the dean of college of engineering and chair professor of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Taiwan. Previously, he worked in the US Air Force Research laboratories and in General Electric company from 1987 to 1992 before joining NCTU. The main contributions from Professor Wei in National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) has been taking advantage of facile molecular-structure of organic materials and tunable optoelectronic properties of nano inorganic materials to fabricate nanocomposites that can be tailored for various applications―such as organic photovoltaics, organic light-emitting diode, transparent and flexible electrodes, organic memory devices and dielectric packaging materials. In particular, Dr. Wei has synthesized conjugated polymers with one- and two-dimensional architectures, deciphered the active layer morphology in bulk-heterojunction polymer solar cells with synchrotron X-ray, developed two-dimensional materials for electrodes and sensing applications and constructed polymer nanocomposite for non-volatile organic memory and packaging applications. Dr. Wei has published more than 210 SCI peer-reviewed papers that together have received over 13,400 citations and has an H-index of 59 along with 10 highly cited papers (top 1% citations), with publications in Science, Nature Nanotechnology, Nano Letter, Nano Energy, Energy & Environmental Science, ACS Nano, Advanced Materials, Small and Advanced Functional Materials. He also holds 19 patents in the US, Taiwan, and Japan. Due to his great contribution to polymer research.

Our Laboratories’ mainly focus on two research areas that are involved in the green energy field. The first one is in organic photovoltaics (OPV) that we synthesized new conjugated polymers and small molecule acceptors and fabricated OPV devices out of these materials; we have two separate laboratories for organic syntheses of polymers and small molecules and two OPV fabrication systems in a clean room in Bo-Ai campus, respectively. We also have a complete characterization equipment such as UV-Vis absorption spectrometer, Atomic Force microscope, solar simulator and transmission electron microscope.

The second area is plasma induced production of two dimensional materials from bulk such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenide (MoS2 or WSe2) nanosheets for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction, super capacitor electrode and battery applications. We had developed an unique way that can reduce energy consumption and is environmentally friendly to inducing in situ exfoliation of bulk power or solid rod into nanosheets with electrochemical induced plasma.
